HELP AVAILABLE FOR CONSUMERS PREPARING FOR DTV
TRANSITION
WASHINGTON, DC – With the nationwide digital
television (DTV) transition on June 12 quickly
approaching, consumers can receive help at many
locations within the New York media market.
On June 12, all full-power television stations
in the United States will stop analog broadcast
service and transmit only digital signals. Consumers
who do not subscribe to pay television services
and have older, analog televisions will need to
attach digital-to-analog converter boxes to their
televisions in order to continue receiving over-the-air
television programming.
The list below includes the most current
DTV transition data for New York market and a list
of local services
provided by the Federal Communications Commission
in your area:
How many people in your community are not ready
for DTV?
Nielsen estimates that as of May 10,
1.42% of households in New York
were not ready for the DTV transition.
How many local households rely on over-the-air
TV signals?
In New York, Nielsen estimates that about 320,370 households
(or 4.3% of that media market) rely entirely on over-the-air

Is it too late for consumers to get coupons for
the converter boxes?
Consumers still have until
July 31 to get coupons
by calling 1-888-CALL-FCC; however, it is too late
to order coupons
and receive them in time for the June 12 transition.
In New York, we know that 2,706,091 people have ordered
coupons

Where can consumers call for help with the DTV
transition? 1-888-CALL-FCC
Because the news media play a crucial role in
reaching consumers who have yet to prepare for
the transition, the FCC has provided a DTV Media
Toolkit (http://www.dtv.gov/media_toolkit.html)
containing information about the transition, including
local statistics and reception information, answers
to frequently asked questions, media contacts and
other important resources. Information about DTV
transition assistance in your local area will be
updated regularly on www.dtv.gov <http://www.dtv.gov/> and
include details about walk-in centers, events where
consumers can get technical help and free in-home
installation.
The switch to digital will reward most viewers
with better sound, a better picture, more channels
and more programs. The transition will also
help save lives by clearing airwaves for better
first-responder
radio service. And it makes room for the future
by clearing airwaves for advanced mobile Internet
services.

Westchester County's
Multi-media group: On the road to the Oscars?
Prestigious Telly and Aurora Video Awards on display
in county office building lobby
Westchester County’s Communications Department is in the
spotlight again. The five Telly Awards and 16 Aurora Awards won
by the department’s multi-media staff for their stellar work
in video production are on display in the lobby of the
Michaelian Office Building at 148 Martine Ave. in White Plains.
The exhibition illustrates the tremendous talents of the multi-media
team – Director Carl Pagano and his staff – Scott Tensel,
Juan Medina and Bill Rodriguez – for their real-life treatments
of subjects such as gangs and youth violence, sexual abuse, gay
youth and Internet safety.
“Whether it’s a documentary on the making of Westchester’s
9-11 Memorial, an educational piece on pandemic flu or a video
that dramatizes the dangers of cyber-bullies, our multi-media team
is the star behind the scene," County Executive Andy Spano
said.
Spano said, “We are very fortunate to have such a talented
and creative multi-media staff. Winning these competitions was
really a big achievement when you consider that their work was
up against some of the country’s most respected ad agencies,
corporate production companies, TV stations and cable operators.
This exhibition recognizes the group for their outstanding work."
Disney and the Philadelphia Zoo are on the list of past Telly
and Aurora honorees.
The multi-media group is part of the county’s Communications
Department headed by Chief Advisor Susan Tolchin.
“I am so proud of the work my multi-media staff does," Tolchin
said. “They are a terrific, conscientious team who work diligently
on everything they produce. Their productions are entertaining
as well as educational and they appeal to everyone. They truly
deserve all the recognition and credit for these impressive awards."
Founded in 1978, the Telly Award is the premiere award honoring
outstanding local, regional and cable television commercials and
programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and
work created for the Web.
The Aurora Award is an international competition designed to
recognize excellence in the film and video industries.
Spano said that all of the award-winning videos featured in the
exhibit and other pieces produced by Pagano and his staff can be
viewed at www.westchestergov.com.
The awards exhibit can be viewed Monday through Friday, from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m.
